FIFTEEN

"Alright," Arsen said, snapping the cover off of one of the engine blocks and crouching down beside it. "Let's see what we're working with."

Ion was holding a flashlight aimed at the engine block for Arsen to see. He couldn't help but felt uneasy in the engine room, like when he was younger and he'd stay up past his bedtime watching space adventure shows. He'd never been able to fully enjoy whatever he was watching because he'd always had to keep a wary eye on his parent's door.

That's what he felt like now as he kept glancing behind him to see if Ilaria or Jerson was going to walk into the room and stop them. He couldn't shake the sense that he was about to get caught.

Maybe Ilaria wouldn't stop them at this point. She had surprised Ion by demanding Jerson cuff her as well. Maybe she wasn't as bad as he had always thought. But she still didn’t put up a fight, but had gone with her old friend to the cockpit.

Ion remembered how they were back in the Academy. They'd been all but inseparable, and he would have thought they were dating if they hadn't both had several relationships over the years while remaining just as close as ever.

"Either aim the light here or give it to me." Arsen's voice snapped Ion's attention back to the present.

He muttered his apologies, adjusting his aim.

A tremor shook the ship, causing Ion to almost fall over. Sparks shot out of the engine block less than an inch from where Arsen's hand was. He flinched back, swearing.

"What did you do?" Ion yelled as his heartbeat pounded in his ears. He could practically see Jerson's livid face in his mind's eye. If there had been any doubt that they'd be caught before, it was gone now.

"I didn't do anything," Arsen said, hands still in the air as he breathed heavily. "I barely touched the damn thing."

"Then what happened?"

"I'm pretty sure we've been shot."

"How did a shot get through the shield?" Ion asked. "This is a brand new ship; they're supposed to be the best."

"Ilaria's friend probably didn't have the shields on," Arsen said as he snapped the cover back onto the engine block. "I'm guessing he's not particularly well-trained as a pilot."

It wasn't a question.

"Any guesses on who it could be?" Ion said.

"I only need one," Arsen's face was grim as he shoved the warp drive under the engine. "Clyde. I should've known better than to think he'd go back to Hermes without either me or proof of my death."

Ion snapped his head to the side. He could've sworn that he'd heard...

"Someone's coming," Ion said. Footsteps could now be clearly heard coming down the hallway.

He looked around the engine room for a place to hide, but there wasn't really anywhere to go. The entire space was devoted to the two engine blocks. With a sigh, he picked up a length of pipe from the floor. Another fight was inevitable, it seemed.

Arsen stepped beside Ion and faced the door with a wrench already in his hand.
